The IUCr journals are published by the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) in partnership with Wiley, and corresponding authors affiliated with participating institutions may be eligible for Article Processing Charge (APC) support through Wiley Read & Publish (transformational) agreements.
The following IUCr journals are eligible under applicable Wiley agreements:
- Acta Crystallographica Section A: Foundations and Advances
- Acta Crystallographica Section B: Structural Science, Crystal Engineering and Materials
- Acta Crystallographica Section C: Structural Chemistry
- Acta Crystallographica Section D: Structural Biology
- Acta Crystallographica Section E: Crystallographic Communications
- Acta Crystallographica Section F: Structural Biology Communications
- Journal of Applied Crystallography
- Journal of Synchrotron Radiation
Eligibility depends on the corresponding author’s institution, journal type, article type, agreement terms, institutional allocation availability and publication dates.
Wiley provides an institutional eligibility checker here:
General information on Wiley transformational agreements is available here:
For the ECA region, Wiley currently lists institutional or consortium agreements across a large number of countries, including Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Türkiye and the United Kingdom, together with a number of agreements in the wider European and Middle Eastern region.
Country-specific information is summarised below.
National and Consortium Agreements
- Many European countries participate through national consortia, including DEAL (Germany), Jisc (United Kingdom), Bibsam (Sweden), FinELib (Finland), IReL (Ireland), CRUI-CARE (Italy), CSAL (Switzerland), HEAL-Link (Greece) and others.
- Coverage varies by country and institution and may include hybrid journals, fully open access journals or both.
- Several agreements are subject to annual article allocations and institutional approval.
Hybrid-only Agreements
A number of national agreements currently support hybrid journals only, including arrangements in:
- Cyprus
- Czech Republic
- Denmark
- France
- Netherlands
- Portugal
- Slovenia
Funding Allocation Limits
- Several countries operate annual article quotas or funding allocations.
- In some cases, fully open access funding has been exhausted while hybrid funding remains available.
- Authors should therefore confirm eligibility at both submission and acceptance stages.
Institution-specific Requirements
- Some agreements require use of an institutional email address.
- Some agreements recommend or require acknowledgement of funding support.
- Eligibility may be restricted to primary research and review articles.
Researchers are therefore encouraged to check eligibility through the Wiley Institution Checker before submission and again at acceptance.
In addition to institutional Read & Publish agreements, Wiley also operates automatic APC waiver and discount programmes for corresponding authors publishing in Wiley fully open access journals, including Journal of Synchrotron Radiation and Acta Crystallographica Section E.
Within the wider ECA region, automatic APC waivers are currently available for eligible corresponding authors from countries including Lebanon, Moldova, Palestine, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen.
Automatic APC discounts are also available for eligible authors from countries including Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iraq, Jordan, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.
Please note that these waiver and discount programmes apply only to Wiley fully open access journals and do not apply to hybrid open access journals. If more than one Wiley discount applies, Wiley states that only the highest discount is applied.
Full details of Wiley waiver and discount policies are available here:

How to apply
When you submit your manuscript, you need to indicate that you request the author publication charges to be covered through a Wiley transformational agreement. Once the manuscript is accepted, the IUCR office sends Wiley a file containing metadata for them to add the paper details to your Wiley dashboard. You are then notified by Wiley to confirm the (corresponding) author(s) on your Wiley dashboard. Wiley then checks to see if there is enough funding available within the transformational deal with your institution or country. You are then notified whether your funding has been approved or not.
