ECM35 Diffuse scattering satellite August 24-25

SIG 14 is organizing a satellite workshop during the 35th European Crystallographic Meeting (ECM35) in Poznan, Poland. The workshop will be held from August 24 and August 25, immediately before the meeting, at the Faculty of Chemistry, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań..

Interest in diffuse scattering analysis and three-dimensional difference pair distribution function (3D-ΔPDF) analysis has significantly increased in recent years, owing to the ability to utilize data from in-house laboratory instruments for analysis. However, data treatment and the initial stages of model building remain challenging. Therefore, the organizers are offering this workshop to assist participants in initiating data treatment and diffuse scattering analysis.

The workshop will feature lectures by prominent figures in 3D-ΔPDF analysis from Europe and experienced users. Participants will benefit from a combination of lectures and practical sessions, where they will become familiar with a complete data processing workflow—from raw diffraction data to diffuse scattering refinement—using the programs Yell and Discus on their own laptops.

Registration Fee: 70 EUR (this includes coffees and lunches on both days).

ECM 35 SIG 14 Poster Prize

The registration and abstract submission for ECM 35 is now open!
We are excited to announce that several microsymposia dedicated to disorder, dynamics, and diffuse scattering will take place at the conference. Details on these sessions will be shared via this mailing list in the coming weeks.

New This Year: SIG-14 Poster Prize!
A poster prize, generously sponsored by DECTRIS, will be awarded by SIG14 at ECM 35. All posters submitted to the following SIG-14 sessions will be eligible:

M19 – Quantum mechanical models for disorder, dynamics, and diffuse scattering
M22 – Short-range order as seen by different techniques
M23 – Dynamics and disorder in complex systems and/or under extreme conditions
M24 – Disordered and defective molecular systems, effect on chemical properties

3D-DPDF and Diffuse Scattering Analysis Workshop

Group photo of participants and lecturers of the workshop

As a satellite event to the European Crystallographic Meeting in Padova,  SIG-14 held a two-day workshop on 3D-ΔPDF and diffuse scattering analysis. 19 participants enjoyed a combination insightful lectures and hands on tutorials to become familiar with a complete data processing workflow—from raw diffraction data to diffuse scattering refinement.

The organizers consider the workshop a success and plan on repeating similar workshops at future ECMs, so stay tuned for updates.

SIG-14 @ ECM34

SIG14 co-hosted several well-attended microsymposia at ECM34 in Padova, Italy (August 26-30, 2024).

Teaching resources

SIG officer Stefano Canossa is putting together a list of teaching resources that cover Fourier transforms for teaching purposes. Furthermore as a science communication project he posts Fourier transforms of aperiodic patterns, fractals and mathematical tilings on Instagram  and freely available on behance. His teaching sets are now  included in the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre teaching resources (DECOR).
