SUMMARY:6th MACSMIN (Mathematics and Computer Science for Materials Innovation)
DESCRIPTION:MACSMIN 2025 is the satellite of the ECM35 (European Crystallographic Meeting) and the 6th annual conference of the series Mathematics and Computer Science for Materials Innovation (https://kurlin.org/macsmin.php). The meeting is hybrid with all talks running also on zoom. \nPlease email vitaliy.kurlin@gmail.com to get a link. Following the MACSMIN tradition since 2020\, the 6th MACSMIN will present a number of scientific advances\, including (1) a final hierarchy of structural invariants (of periodic crystals\, rigid molecular conformations\, and protein backbones) from the ultra-fast to complete with polynomial-time metrics\, which exposed numerous exact and many more near-duplicates in the major databases such as the CSD\, COD\, ICSD\, Materials Project\, Google’s GNoME\, and PDB; and (2) three principles of Atomic Geometry aiming to determine all chemistry from the precise enough geometry.

SUMMARY:International Workshop on Powder Diffraction - IWPD2025
DESCRIPTION:This intensive three-day workshop offers a thorough introduction to modern powder diffraction techniques\, combining theoretical foundations with practical applications. The program is designed for graduate students\, researchers\, and professionals aiming to deepen their understanding and hands-on skills in phase identification\, quantitative analysis\, and structure determination using powder X-ray diffraction data.\nThe course begins with the fundamental principles of powder diffraction and qualitative phase analysis\, including the use of databases and software (PDF-5+\, JADEPro and Qualx2.0). Day 2 focuses on quantitative phase analysis\, structure solution\, and Rietveld refinement\, supported by guided exercises using EXPO and TOPAS software. The final day explores advanced topics such as total scattering\, Pair Distribution Function (PDF) analysis\, and microstructural characterization through size-strain analysis.\nThroughout the course\, participants will engage in practical sessions aimed at developing autonomy in data interpretation\, profile fitting\, and structure modelling using widely adopted software packages in the field.

SUMMARY:Goldschmidt 2026\, Session 02h - Under pressure: from chemical bonding to planetary structures and evolution
DESCRIPTION:Dear colleagues\,\nWe hope you will join a scientific session focusing on bonding at extreme conditions at the 2026 Goldschmidt Conference in Montreal\, Canada\, July 12-17\, 2026.\nOver the past few decades\, observations of exotic bonding behaviors\, complex stoichiometries\, and low-symmetry arrangements in simple and binary systems—including noble-gas compounds—have progressively reshaped our picture of Earth’s structure and evolution\, as well as processes such as volcanism and tectonics. Rather than a relatively simple\, uniform deep Earth that can be described as consisting of a few high-symmetry phases\, we now envision a more mineralogically differentiated and chemically intricate planet\, where minor constituents can play major roles. This view aligns with the heterogeneities revealed by seismology. The exotic nature of bonding and crystal chemistry that governs Earth’s inner structure and dynamics is gradually being uncovered\, yet remains far from fully understood and generalized.\nThis session brings together experimental and theoretical studies that advance our understanding of the chemistry\, bonding\, and resulting physical properties of matter in planetary deep interiors\, as well as the extreme-condition static and dynamic processes that shape planetary compositions and structures. These include the identification of new compounds and phases\, determinations of material properties at high pressure\, and investigations of bonding mechanisms under extreme conditions. We also seek contributions that articulate open problems and challenges warranting further\ninvestigation. \nKeynote speaker: Thomas S. Duffy\, Princeton University \nPlease consider submitting an abstract by February 26\, 2026\nWe look forward to meet you in Montreal\, Canada\nBarbara Lavina (U. of Chicago & Argonne Natl. Lab.)\, Stefano Racioppi (University of Cambridge)\, Martin Rahm (Chalmers University of Technology)
